Message from the President
Welcome to the National Society of Black Engineers at Michigan State University.
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE pronounced NEZ BE) was founded at
Purdue University in the 1970s to help retain and support Black Engineering students.
According to the Region IV website (our region, the "Mother Region"), at the time, 80
percent of black students dropped out of the engineering program. Today, NSBE continues the fight.
Our mission statement is:
"To increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically,
succeed professionally and positively impact the community."
Still we struggle boasting roughly a 25 percent graduation rate.
That means 75 percent of black students will drop out or get kicked out of the engineering program here at
Michigan State. So some 30 years later, we have seen only a 5 percent increase in the numbers of black
engineers. Change must happen!
We are here to help you succeed and to give you tried and true methods to be successful as an engineering
student. We will help you find your way at MSU, provide you with a safe family environment to help you
prosper, make available to you activities that will build your resume, and help you land internships and
full-time jobs opportunities.
All we need is YOU. Without YOU, there is no change. Without YOU, companies will stop coming to MSU looking
for black engineers. Without YOU, individuals and companies will stop sending us scholarship funding.
YOU are NSBE, and we want to help you. Tell us want you need and WE will listen, WE will take action.
TOGETHER WE WILL SUCCEED.
I look forward to an exciting year. If there is anything that the NSBE leadership can do for you, just ask.
Sincerely,
George Samuel Williams
