Synergistic Activities

Following are some of my education and integrative activities and distinctions:
  • Member of The American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE).

  • Member of the Vice Provost's ad-hoc task group on "High Performance Research Computing," to evaluate the university's high-performance computing equipment needs. Based upon this task group's recommendations, The Center for Computational Research (CCR) was established at the University at Buffalo, SUNY---CCR is currently one of the world's leading supercomputing sites supporting high-performance computing and high-end visualization.

  • Opening day program coordinator for incoming computer engineering freshmen for the past four years.

  • Chair or member of departmental committees on curriculum development, library, colloquium, graduate and undergraduate affairs, computing facilities, and sponsored research strategic planning.

  • Attended the following teaching and career seminars/workshops:

    • ASEE/NSF Visiting Scholars Teaching Workshop: Creating a Collaborative Learning Environment, Buffalo, NY, Feb. 16-17 (stage 1), Apr. 27 (stage 2), 1998.

    • Computing Research Association Effective Teaching in Computer Science and Engineering Workshop, Denver, CO, Jun. 5 - 6, 1997.

    • Computing Research Association Academic Careers Workshop, Denver, CO, Jun. 4-5, 1997.

  • Awarded the highest teaching recommendation by the Minnesota English Center's TA English Program at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities during graduate studies.

  • Published the following education-related refereed papers:

    • "The role of computer technology trends in computer architecture education," Proc. 5th Annual Workshop on Computer Architecture Education (WCAE-5), colocated with 5th Int'l Symp. on High-Performance Computer Architecture (HPCA-5), Orlando, FL, Jan. 9-12, 1999.

    • "A course on high-performance parallel optimization," Proc. ASEE-NCS (North Central Section) 1999 Spring Conference, pp. 262-264, Erie, Pennsylvania, Apr. 9-10, 1999.

    • "Animation of parallel algorithms for optimization problems," Proc. ASEE - St. Lawrence Section Annual Meeting, Quebec, Canada, Apr. 16-17, 1999.

  • Developed two courses, one on computer architecture and another on parallel computing and dependability, for senior undergraduate and graduate students, integrating my research in both. Both courses have also been offered to distance learners in industry.

  • Supervising and mentoring an active group of Ph.D. and M.S. students in my areas of research.

  • Forged collaborations with industry to enrich both my research and education endeavors. For example, I have invited experts from IBM, Poughkeepsie to give guest lectures to my computer architecture class.

  • Participated in grants that have brought in significant equipment and software for high-performance computing and VLSI design automation.

  • Obtained NSF grant to support integrated research and education activities.

  • Served as chair or member of more than 40 graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) thesis and project committees.

  • Engaged in a range of professional society activities as organizer, program committee member, and reviewer.
