Graduate School Inventive Fellowship Sponsored by: Graduate School Value: $9,000 Deadline: June 30/Spring; December 31/Fall If you would like more information please contact allisonc@msu.edu. One $9000 fellowship will be awarded to a currently enrolled MSU graduate student who applies for, but does NOT receive, an externally-funded fellowship. In addition, $100 will be awarded for each viable proposal submitted.

Graduate Student Research Enhancement Award Sponsored by: Vice President for Research Value: $500-$1,000 Deadline: none If you would like more information please contact Tony Nunez, 118 Linton Hall. Enhancement awards are intended to match/supplement funds provided by advisors, units and colleges. Only 1 request per student/teure in degree program will be considered. Student must be registered the semester the funding is awarded. The Graduate School will make decisions on support within 3 weeks after receiving all of the necessary materials.

Truman Scholarship Value: $30,000 If you would like more information please contact Scott Vaughn, 355-2326. A merit-based grant awarded to undergraduate students, who wish financial support to attend graduate or professional school in preparatin for careers in government, the non-profit sector or elsewhere in public service. Candidates must attend an accredited US college or university and be nominated by the institution's Truman Faculty Representative, be US citizens or US nationals, complete an application and write a policy recommendation, be in the upper quarter of their junior class, except for residents of Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa or the Northern Marianas who must be in their senior class. Financial aid is not a consideration.

Natural Hazard Mitigation in Japan (summer research) Sponsored by: University of Notre Dame If you would like more information please contact www.nd.edu/~quake/nhmj. This summer research experience will provide unique opportunities to explore Japanese culture and the state of research and practice in natural hazard mitigation to 12 US graduate students during the summer of 2003. The NHMJ Program is coordinated at the University of Notre Dame under the auspices of the current NSF US-Japan Cooperative Research Program in Urban Earthquake Disaster Mitigation, and is sponsored by the Japan-Korea Program and the Earthquake Hazard Mitigation Program of the NSF.

The Food, Nutrition, and Chronic Disease fund still has available fellowship funds for graduate students. This is a broadly defined fund that can be used for graduate student travel, research studies/enhancement, travel for professional development. This is also broadly defined and applies to communication, behavior, experimental research, applied research....all as applied to food, nutrition, chronic disease.

Postdoctoral Research Awards Sponsored by: National Research Cuoncil Value: $34,000-$61,000 If you would like more information please contact www.national-academies.org/rap. The NRC administers competitive postdoctoral and senior research awards on behalf of 35 U.S. government research agencies with facilities at over 120 locations throughout the U.S. and abroad. Awardees have the opportunity to: Conduct independent research in an area compatible with the interests of the sponsoring laboratory devote full-time effort to research and publication access the excellent and often unique facilities of the federal research enterprise collaborate with leading scientists and engineers at federal research laboratories Awards are available for scientists and engineers at all stages of their career. Applicants should hold, or anticipate receiving, an earned doctorate in science or engineering. Most awards are open to foreign nationals as well as to U.S. citizens. Postdoctoral awards are for 12 months with renewal up to 3 years. Senior research awards may be for shorter periods of time. Summer faculty awards are for 8-14 weeks, renewable for up to 3 successive summers.

Mackinac Scholarship Sponsored by: Michigan Section-ASCE Value: $2,500 Deadline: Memorial Day, 2006 If you would like more information please contact http://sections.asce.org/michigan. The award is presented annually, and will consist of a 2-year grant of $2,500 each year to a student entering his/her junior year at an ABET-accredited civil engineering program. The ward considers merit, personal initiative, and financial need and encourages both participation in a student chapter of ASCE and engineering activity outside of classroom work as evidence of serious preparation for future professional employment.
