The Women in Engineering Summer Residential Program
The Women in Engineering Summer Residential Program was held July 19- 23, 2009.
Twenty-one women students entering the 10th, 11th and 12th grade learned about different fields of engineering, alternative energy and Wireless Integrated Microsystems (WIMS). They participated in hands on projects, watched cool demonstrations, and toured a number of labs. During the week, the ladies also had the opportunity to learn about admission to MSU, study abroad, experiential education and the MSU Honors College. While attending the program, the participants had a chance to work with outstanding engineering faculty, staff, and students. They also lived on campus which gave them a taste of college life in the residence halls.
During the week, the participants picked an area of engineering that most interested them, and they designed posters based on their area of interest. On Thursday evening at the closing ceremony, parents and families were invited to view the posters and ask the students questions. Four ladies also gave insightful power point presentations on their topics of interest.
“This Program is so important”, noted Judy Cordes the program Co-Director. Cordes, the Coordinator of the Women in Engineering Program at MSU stated, “We need to introduce young women to the field of engineering and keep them motivated to pursue a career in engineering or technology. Women are underrepresented in the field and they bring a unique perspective to engineering and the many problems that engineers work with everyday.”
It was a great week for all. To check out photos of this year’s program click here.
