Glossary Relevant to the Whitehall TOSC Project

  • Administrative Record -The record compiled by U.S. EPA to support the proposed remedy.
  • BioGeoChemMix™ -Trademark product designed to perform anaerobic bioremediation and biological reduction of resistant waste.
  • C-series Compounds - A group of organic chemicals manufactured at OCC (e.g., hexachlorocyclopentadiene) or derived as a result of the manufacturing process.
  • Consent Judgement -October 30. 1979 Ingham County Michigan Circuit Court action to cleanup contamination at the OCC facility.
  • Daramend® Technology -Bioremediation that works by alternating between anaerobic and aerobic conditions to stimulate the breakdown of resistant waste.
  • Dioxin -A toxic compound generated during combustion.
  • Exposure Area -Six locations at the OCC facility where contaminated soil was investigated.
  • Institutional Controls - Legal mechanisms designed to control exposure to chemicals in environmental media. Can include deed notices, easements, covenants, well drilling prohibitions, and zoning restrictions.
  • Michigan Part 201 - Generic cleanup criteria and screening levels developed under the State of Michigan Natural Resources and Environmental Protection Act.
  • Mirex - An insecticide and flame retardant derived from hexachlorocyclopentadiene.
  • Net Present Value - Present cost estimate using a nominal discount rate to account for 30-year operation and maintenance period.
  • No Mans Land - Strip of land in the Central Exposure Area partially excavated to remove soil contaminants.
  • PCB/ ACM Conversion - Thermochemical treatment in a mobile unit designed to convert PCBs and asbestos into inert stable non-hazardous material.
  • ppb - Part-per-billion; unit of liquid or solid measurement. 1000 ppb equal 1 ppm.
  • ppm - Part-per-million; unit of liquid or solid measurement. 10,000 ppm equal 1%.
  • Purge Well System - A series of eight wells installed by OCC at the southern property boundary to capture groundwater contamination before it can discharge to White Lake.
  • RCRA - Resource Contamination and Recovery Act; regulates hazardous waste management.
  • VOCs - Chlorinated carbon-containing compounds that readily evaporate at room temperature. VOCs were generated as hazardous waste during the manufacturing process at the OCC facility.
