Minergy Clear Horizons Project, Delray, MichiganCurrently, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is reviewing an Air Use Permit application submitted by Minergy Detroit LLC, for a sewage sludge incineration/glass aggregate production facility in southwest Detroit. Using a high-temperature incineration process, Minergy will convert this sludge to glass aggregate, an inert material used in construction and industrial markets. The permit is being reviewed by MDEQ's Air Quality Division for completeness and compliance with regulations. MDEQ's review will include an examination of emissions levels of such "criteria air pollutants" as nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone, carbon monoxide (CO) and particulates (or soot); and emissions of "air toxics", including mercury, lead and dioxin. The TOSC program is currently providing technical assistance and educational services to local citizen groups and conducting and independent review of the permit application.
