Education and Information Session

Presented by TOSC and the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute

January 13, 2000

On January 13, 2000, the TOSC program and the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute conducted an Education and Information Session for the residents of Ashland and surrounding communities. The session was co-sponsored by the Lake Superior Alliance and the Ashland/Bayfield County League of Women Voters. Meetings were held both during the afternoon and evening; approximately 50 interested citizens attended the meetings. TOSC wants to thank Kathy Allen and Mike Gardner for their organizational assistance, and SOEI's Dr. Kenneth Bro for facilitating the meeting. TOSC also wants to thank Father Vernon and Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church for generously extending the use of the Social Hall for the meeting.

The meeting focused on a discussion of what is known about the contamination at the site. Michael Lang, TOSC project specialist, discussed the history and use of the site. Dr. Thomas Voice, Professor of Environmental Engineering at Michigan State University, presented information about the extent of contamination, including impacts to groundwater, soils and sediments. The slides presented by Dr. Voice are available by clicking here.

Following the presentations, attendees were divided into four 8-10 person groups, and asked to list the major questions and concerns that they have about the site. A facilitator recorded each comment or question on an easel. Participants were then asked, individually, to rate their top three priorities that they would like to have addressed at subsequent workshops. The items generating the most support were then reported back to the full group. Click here for a report of the group's responses.

Documents were handed out at the meeting and are available here in both HTML and PDF formats. For a complete listing of documents and links to them, click here.

The next meeting of the Ashland/NSP Lakefront site group will be held on February 17, 2000.
