Education and Information Session
Presented by TOSC

September 21, 2000

A public meeting to address the revetment currently being constructed by the National Gypsum Cement Kiln Dust Site was held on Thursday, September 21, in the Granum Theatre, at Alpena Community College. During the meeting, TOSC faculty and staff discussed:

  • What do we know about the design of the revetment? Will it hold up over time?
  • Will the revetment reduce movement of the CKD materials into the bay?
  • What type of currents exist within the bay relative to the Alpena municipal drinking water supply?
  • What are the benefits and drawbacks of the revetment?
  • What additional work needs to be completed?

Many other topics and questions were also covered. The meeting was sponsored jointly by the Alpena Air and Water Quality Committee and the Technical Outreach Services for Communities (TOSC) program. In the Friday edition of the Alpena News Online an article covered the meeting. Click here to view that article.

Diane Lickfelt, TOSC Project Engineer, presented a brief introduction to the current status of the CKD site. This material can be viewed by clicking here.

Dr. Guy Meadows, Professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan, presented his extensive review of the revetment design. His presentation can be viewed by clicking here. To view a short video clip of the meeting click here. The full length tapes are available at the library.

TOSC distributed a revetment information brief to provide a better understanding of revetments, and a glossary of terms relevent to the site. Click below to view each document (best if viewed in Internet Explorer):
