Education and Information Session

June 29, 2000

A public meeting to address groundwater, soil and lake contamination from the National Gypsum Cement Kiln Dust Site was held on Thursday, June 29, in the Granum Theatre, Center Building, at Alpena Community College. During the meeting, TOSC faculty and staff discussed the ongoing investigation related to the CKD contamination. The meeting was sponsored jointly by the Alpena Air and Water Quality Committee and the Technical Outreach Services for Communities (TOSC) program. TOSC presented the findings of an initial review of documents related to the CKD site, focusing on current understanding about the contamination.

Shawn McElmurry, TOSC Project Specialist, reviewed the MDEQ site scoring process, and commented on the prospect of future reviews. His presentation can be viewed by clicking here.

Dr. Michael J. Barcelona, Professor of Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan, presented information on the National Gypsum Cement kiln dust pile. His presentation can be viewed by clicking here.
