TOSC ENVIRONMENTAL BRIEFS FOR CITIZENS

The Effects of High pH at the Alpena CKD Site

The Role of pH

The surface water and groundwater at the Alpena National Gypsum Cement Kiln Dust (CKD) site have high pH levels. The water is very basic, the oppo-site of acidic. While the effects of high pH are not completely understood, we scientific studies provide some information. In this TOSC Environmental Brief, we examine the issue of pH, with emphasis on the impacts of high pH from the Alpena CKD site. What effect does the high pH have on water quality? What ecological effects does the high pH have? Are there risks to human health?
