Alpena Cement Kiln Dust Project, Alpena, Michigan

Current TOSC activities

Project Profile and Proposal TOSC has written a Project Profile and Proposal to provide technical assistance and educational services to the Alpena County Air and Water Quality Study/Action Group regarding the National Gypsum cement kiln dust pile. The assistance is directed at the group and other residents of Alpena County. The proposal is available in HTML format. Review of the Revetment Proposal and Educational Series TOSC proposes to hold an educational workshop to explain the revetment permit application (along with other potential interim remedy options) and to provide comments on it. Dr. Guy Meadows, of the University of Michigan's Department of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering has agreed to lead the permit review and educational session. Community Partner Organizations

TOSC has developed a partnership with the Air and Water Quality Group who will act as the primary contact point with the Alpena community. TOSC and the Air and Water Quality Group are actively seeking out other interested parties to participate in site cleanup decision making.

University Partners

The Michigan State University Office of the Great Lakes and Mid-Atlantic Center for Hazardous Substance Research (GLMAC) is leading the project.
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan has also provided faculty to this project.
