Sam Winer Motors Site

Site Description

Contamination at the Sam Winer Motors Site is believed to originate from a former gasoline station, Wright's Truck Stop. Former underground storage tanks have been removed from the site in the past. Documentation does not conclusively show that all of the tanks present within the area were removed properly.

On July 6, 1999 the Ohio EPA conducted an Integrated Assessment at the site. As a result of this investigation, soil and groundwater contamination was discovered. The contamination discovered was typical of gasoline spills and other solvents. Ohio EPA reported some of the following concentrations present in groundwater samples at the site:

  • vinyl chloride 1,200 ppb
  • methylene chloride 120,000 ppb
  • 1,1,1-trichloroethane 400,000 ppb
  • trichloroethane 210,000 ppb
  • toluene 580,000 ppb
  • xylene 300,000 ppb
  • ethylbenzene 65,000 ppb
  • benzene 2,400 ppb

To ensure citizens safety the Ohio EPA and USEPA also sampled residential wells.

Community Partner Organization

TOSC is in the process of developing a partnership with Concerned Citizens Against Illegal Contamination (CCAIC) and other citizens of the Springfield community and surrounding areas. TOSC and the CCAIC are actively seeking out other interested parties to participate in site cleanup decision-making.
