The research team consists of collaboration between Michigan State University and Tufts University, which combines strengths and resources in experimentation, analysis, design practice and education. The research effort is also assisted by an external international advisory board.
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR |
Rigoberto Burgueño, Ph.D.Associate Professor, Michigan State University |
Dr. Burgueño is an assistant professor of structural engineering at Michigan State University’s Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, where he also directs MSU’s Civil Infrastructure Laboratory. His background in bridge engineering has been primarily as a researcher in the development, performance assessment, and implementation of innovative materials. He has also been involved in the design, analysis, and erection control of landmark bridges as well as served on earthquake assessment and retrofit teams. His specific research activities are currently focused on (i) development of tailored structural materials, components, and systems, (ii) computational design optimization of materials and structures, (iii) large-scale testing, (iv) soft-computing for structural integrity assessment; and (v) earthquake engineering. He obtained his BS., MS. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, San Diego all in structural engineering. He serves in various professional committees related to concrete structures, advanced composite materials, and earthquake resistant bridge design.
CO-PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR |
Eric M. Hines, Ph.D., P.E.Associate, LeMessurier ConsultantsResearch Assistant Professor, Tufts University |
Dr. Hines is a structural engineer at LeMessurier Consultants in Cambridge, Mass., and a research assistant professor at Tufts University, Medford, Mass. He received his BSE in civil engineering from Princeton University, Princeton, N.J.; studied structural engineering as a Fulbright Fellow at the University of Stuttgart, Germany; and received his MSE and PhD in structural engineering from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), Calif. He is a member of ACI Committee 341, Earthquake-Resistant Bridges.
