About NSBE
Message from the President
Hello and I welcome you to the home of the National Society of Black Engineers, Michigan State Chapter! Pride is instilled in the 2008-2009 Executive Board as we represent the National NSBE organization by way of our National Website of the Year (2007-2008), serving members new, current, and alumni, faculty members, the Lansing/East Lansing community, and our valued corporate partners.
We as an E-board are collectively very excited the current school year and the many accomplishments the MSU chapter intends to add on to our proud history at this university.
For the 2008-2009 academic school year, the NSBE-MSU family will focus on increasing the retention rates of underrepresented minorities in engineering and academic excellence through strategic programming by way of serving each and every M.E.M.B.E.R.
Our plan is built upon the following aspects of the national NSBE mission:
(1) Membership growth in numbers and participation
(2) Expansion of the NSBE impact in the MSU student body and East Lansing community
(3) Modeling the professionalism of the national organization
(4) Boosting member experience and leadership skills
(5) Enhancement of NSBE program effectiveness
(6) Rising to the top of Region IV
These goals contribute to the success of underrepresented populations in the engineering fields at MSU and provide opportunity for success at the collegiate and corporate level.

About NSBE
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is a 501(C)(3) non-profit association that is owned and managed by its members. The organization is dedicated to the academic and professional success of African-American engineering students and professionals. NSBE offers its members leadership training, professional development, mentoring opportunities, career placement services and more! NSBE is comprised of more than 300 collegiate, 75 professional and 75 pre-college chapters nationwide and overseas.
NSBE is governed by an executive board of college students and engineering professionals and is operated by a professional staff in our World Headquarters located in Alexandria, VA.
NSBE with its unique characteristics, has accomplished more for Black engineering students than any other organization in the world. The same light that NSBE spreads to students and professionals in the United States is also relevant in African, European, South American, Asian, Caribbean, Canadian, Australian and Pacific Islander countries for people of color.
It is the NSBE leadership's vision that the organization will replicate itself in countries around the world, creating a world network of Black engineers, scientists and technologists through its international operations.
The NSBE Mission
NSBE's mission is " to increase the number of culturally responsible Black Engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally and positively impact2 the community. "
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) with more than 24,000 members, is one of the largest student-managed organization in the country. NSBE is comprised of more than 270 chapters on college and university campuses, 75 Alumni Extension chapters nationwide and 75 Pre-College chapters. These chapters are geographically divided into six regions.
NSBE's Objectives
The National Society of Black Engineers strive to accomplish the following objectives for our organization:
- Stimulate and develop student interest in the various engineering disciplines.
- Strive to increase the number of minority students studying engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Encourage members to seek advanced degrees in engineering or related fields and to obtain professional engineering registrations.
- Promote public awareness of engineering and the opportunities for Blacks and other minorities in that profession.
- Function as a representative body on issues and developments that affect the careers of Black Engineers.
New and innovative project ideas are generated and implemented throughout the year on the chapter, regional and national levels. Some of NSBE's present activities include tutorial programs, group study sessions, high school/junior high outreach programs, technical seminars and workshops, a national communications network (NSBENET), two national magazines (NSBE Magazine and the NSBE Bridge), an internal newsletter, a professional newsletter (The Career Engineer, a supplement in the NSBE Magazine), resume books, career fairs, awards, banquets and an annual national convention.

History
In 1971, two Purdue undergraduate students, Edward Barnette (now deceased) and Fred Cooper approached the dean of engineering at Purdue University with the concept of starting the Black Society of Engineers (BSE). They wanted to establish a student organization to help improve the recruitment and retention of black engineering students. In the late 1960's, a devastating 80 percent of the black freshmen entering the engineering program dropped out. The dean agreed to the idea and assigned the only black faculty member on staff, Arthur J. Bond, as advisor.
Barnett served as the first president of the BSE. The fledging group gained momentum in 1974, with the direction and encouragement of Bond and the active participation of the young men whose destiny was to become the founders of NSBE. Now known as the "Chicago Six", these men are Anthony Harris, Brian Harris, Stanley L. Kirtley, John W. Logan, Jr., Edward A. Coleman, and George A. Smith.
Encouraged by their on-campus success, Anthony Harris, president of the Purdue chapter, wrote a letter to the presidents and deans of every accredited engineering program in the country (288), explained the Society of Black Engineers (SBE) concept and asked them to identify black student leaders, organizations and faculty members who might support their efforts on a national basis. Approximately 80 schools responded. Many had similar Black student organizations with similar objectives. A date was set for the first national meeting and 48 students representing 32 schools attended the event, held April 10-12, 1975. Harris also changed the organizations' nomenclature from the BSE to the Society of Black Engineers (SBE).
It was at that historic meeting through majority vote, that SBE became the National Society of Black Engineers. The familiar NSBE symbol "N" with lightning bolts was chosen and it remains a distinctively recognizable symbol representing the premier technical organization for African American engineering students and professionals. NSBE was eventually incorporated in Texas, in 1976 as 501©3 non-profit organization. John Cason, also of Purdue, served as the first elected president of NSBE. As the organization grew, Virginia Booth became the first female National Chairperson and the first to serve two terms 1978-1980.
The Torch
The torch symbolizes members' everlasting, burning desire to achieve success in a competitive society and positively affect the quality of life for all people. The lightening bolt represents the striking impact2 that will be felt by the society and industry due to the contributions and accomplishments made by the dedicated members of the National Society of Black Engineers.
NSBE has since grown from six to about 20,000 members and the annual meeting has blossomed into the Annual National Convention, hosting over 8,000 attendees. NSBE has 17 NSBE Jr. pre-college, 268 student and 50 alumni/technical professional chapters. Headquartered in Alexandria, Va.,NSBE offers academic excellence programs, scholarships, leadership training, professional development and access to career opportunities for thousands of members annually. With over 2000 elected leadership positions, 12 regional conferences and an annual convention, NSBE provides opportunities for success that remain unmatched by any other organization
The Founders
Michigan State University Chapter
The Michigan State University Chapter of NSBE was founded on January 25th, 1979. The founding members were Timothy Lucas, Wayne A. Hopkins, Kevin D. Stokes, W. Denise King, Maurice Sanders, Michael E. Wagner, Kenneth T. Harrison, Hillard J. Germany, Ronald Dewberry, and Victoria F. Chatman.
Today, NSBE at MSU is a flourishing organization. We strive to be one of the most prominent campus groups and also one of the strongest NSBE chapters in Region Four. Our chapter boasts over 50 members annually and a chapter grade point average of approximately 3.0.
This year we plan to offer a wide range of programs to our membership and the MSU community. The programming efforts will generally focus on academic and technical excellence, professional development, community service, networking, and social activities.
NSBE is striving to be on the frontier as the premier technical organization for minority students. To reach our goals, we will continue to strengthen our relationships with the College of Engineering, the MSU community, industry, and most importantly, our membership.
