John William Podesta Jr.
John William Podesta Jr. (BS Mech Egr ’51), formerly of Ann Arbor, died September 8, 2011, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, after a long illness. He was born March 18, 1929, in Clayton, Mich., to John W. Podesta Sr. and Velma V. Podesta. He was a 1946 graduate of Ann Arbor High School.
After graduating from MSU, Podesta enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and served from 1952 to 1954. Later he had a 35-year career with General Motors. He was an active member of the Society of Automotive Engineers, and of the MSU Alumni Association and Presidents Club.
Podesta is survived by his wife, Valerie; ex-wife, Betty L. Podesta, of Ann Arbor; daughters, Diane L. Carson (Doug) of Howell, Mich., Lizabeth A. Grove (Marvin) of Big Rapids, Mich.; and three grandchildren, Brian J. Grove, Ryan B. Piel, and Stacia A. Grove. John was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Susan M. Podesta, in 1989; and brother, Galen L. Podesta.
