Stuart L. DeWitt
Stuart L. DeWitt (BS Mech Egr '48) of Greenville, Mich., passed away Nov. 7, 2013, at Spectrum Health United Memorial Hospital in Greenville.
He was born Oct. 26, 1925, in Grand Haven, Mich., the son of Dr. Stuart and Ida (Broomhead) DeWitt. While attending Michigan State University, his schooling was interrupted when he entered the U.S. Navy during World War II, returned to MSU and received his degree as a Mechanical Engineer and graduated in 1948.
On Sept. 15, 1951, he married Janet Elaine O’Keefe at First Presbyterian Church in South Bend, Ind. He was employed as an engineer for Hot Point in Chicago. Stuart and Janet built their first home in Villa Park, Ill. In 1951, he received his professional engineering degree license and in 1955, became active with the Jaycees and served as president. In 1967 they moved to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, when he worked for Amana and in 1970 they moved to Greenville and worked for Gibsons and was a member of the Lions Club.
In 1977 they moved to Morris, Ill., where he was employed as an engineering manager with Bimet. He volunteered as a trustee for the Congregational Church, served as the secretary of the Rotary club for 10 years, served as president for their condominium association and manager of the condominium swimming pool, was a driver for the Morris Hospital Transportation and various other volunteer jobs. They returned to Greenville in 2010. He loved golf, working in his workshop, puttering in the garage and yard and was an avid MSU and Chicago Bears fan.
Stuart is survived by his wife of 62 years, Janet; children Sharon DeWitt of Portland, Ore., Stuart Jr. (Karen) Dewitt of Greenville and Scott DeWitt of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, Heather (Jed) Averill, Dominique (Tyler) Thomas and Tana (Daryn) Strouse, all of Greenville, and Amanda (Matthew) Lares of Jenison; six great-grandchildren, Owen, Drew and Jada Averill, Elizabeth Thomas, and Conner and Emma Strouse, all of Greenville; brother, Dr. William (Janet) DeWitt of Sioux Falls, S.D.; sister, Margaret (Gordon) VanWylen of Holland; sister-in-law, Barbara Collins of Chatham, N.J.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Stuart and Ida DeWitt; stepmother, Mary DeWitt; sisters, Esther Broomhead and Nancy Fountain; and his brother, Peter DeWitt.
Funeral services were Monday, Nov. 11, 2013, at the First Congregational Church, Greenville. Burial was in Spring Lake Cemetery.
