Retired Civil Engineering Professor Orlando (Andy) B. Andersland of East Lansing died Sept. 27. He was 86.Orlando (Andy) Andersland

He was born Aug. 15, 1929, in Albert Lea, Minn., to Ole Andersland and Brita Økland.

Andersland earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Minnesota, served as a 2nd Lt. in the Corps of Engineers in Korea, and then completed his master’s and PhD at Purdue University.

He taught civil engineering at MSU from January 1960 until his retirement in July 1994. He received the Distinguished Faculty Award in 1979. He was internationally known for his research and textbooks on the mechanical properties of frozen ground.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Phyllis; children Mark (Mary Susan Pruzinsky), John, Ruth Andersland (Carl Beckett), and grandchildren Michael, Matthew, and Lars Andersland and David, Grace, and Faith Beckett.

A memorial service was conducted at University Lutheran Church, 1020 S. Harrison Road, East Lansing, on Friday, Oct. 2. Burial will be in Amor, Minn., in the summer of 2016.
