Joe Theodore Aalsburg, PE, (BS Civ Egr ’48) of Rockford, Mich., died at the Lena Meijer Heart Center on Sept. 19, 2014. He was 89.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering at MSU in 1948 and later earned a master’s degree in civil engineering from MIT.

As a civil engineer, he energetically provided structural consulting in construction throughout Western Michigan. Aalsburg was a builder both commercially and residentially and the owner of Aalsburg Construction. He built many schools and churches including Hope Reformed Church, where his services took place.

He maintained an office at Standard Lumber until his death. One of his proudest accomplishments was obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Margaret J. Aalsburg, three children and their spouses, Susan K Aalsburg, Debra Aalsburg Smale (David) and Timothy Aalsburg (Sheila) and son-in-law Charles Wiessner; brother John Aalsburg, grandchildren Kenneth (Maranda) Aalsburg, Brianna Smale, Gregory Smale, Nathaniel (Kimberly) Wiessner, Benjamin Wiessner, Chloe Aalsburg, Maya Aalsburg, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

A memorial service was held Sept. 28 at Hope Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. Memorials can be made to Samaritan's Purse, Words of Hope or The Micah Center.
