James R. Postema

James R. Postema (BS Elec Egr ‘63) of Byron Center died March 8 after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease. He was 79.

He was born in Grand Rapids on Dec. 26, 1935. He graduated from Union High School and earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering at Michigan State University in 1963.

During his career he designed electric motors for Universal Electric in Owosso, obtaining patents and working his way to chief engineer. He then became executive vice president of Technetic Industries in North Carolina, a waterslide park manufacturer. He helped establish at Michigan Monument Company in Byron Center. 

Surviving are his wife, Leona; his children, James L. (Lisa), Rachel; step-children, Christopher (Aimee), Malinda (Walter II) Strickler; grandchildren, Emily Lynne Postema, Elena Mae Postema, six step-grandchildren; three brothers, Ronald (Sharon), Larry (Aleta), Leonard (Jeanne); former wife, Diane Sage Postema, along with many nieces and nephews. 

Funeral services were March 15 at Stroo Funeral Home of Grand Rapids, with interment in Blain Cemetery.
