Arvin F. Mueller

Arvin F. Mueller (BS Mech Egr '65), age 71, of East Tawas, Mich., and formerly of Bloomfield Hills and Oxford, Mich., died September 6, 2012. He was born on July 23, 1941, in Little Falls, N.Y. to the late William and Sophie Mueller, who were German immigrants. He spent his formative years growing up on a livestock farm in that community.

Mueller was a General Motors Corporation officer and the group vice president responsible for GM Powertrain. He retired in 2001 with more than 41 years of service. During his impressive career, Mueller served on GM's Automotive Strategy Board, North American Strategy Board, the board of directors of Saturn Corporation, the board of directors of the Fiat-GM Powertrain Joint Venture, and that of Isuzu Motors Limited in Japan. He was also a founding member of the governing council of the United States Council for Automotive Research (USCAR), a member of the board of directors for the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, D.C., and the board of trustees for Kingsbury School in Oxford, Mich. In addition, he served as GM's key executive for Michigan State University.

After retiring from General Motors, Mueller served on the boards of the Questor Private Equity Fund and of Teksid Aluminum. He also provided management consulting services to Brunswick Corporation and 3M, in addition to advising PRTM, a leading management consulting firm. More recently, he served as chairman of the board at Bopp-Busch Manufacturing Company, where he was also a mentor. In September 2010, he was named the recipient of SAE International's prestigious Edward N. Cole Award for Automotive Engineering Innovation. Mueller also was a founding member of the Board of Shared Solutions, a nonprofit whose mission is to enhance the quality and effectiveness of national public policy dialogues. He was an intellectual leader of the board and a powerful mentor to its management team.

He is survived by his wife, Annette; his sons Kyle (Erica) and Jay (Claudia); granddaughter Corinna; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Mueller and Martha Mueller; and many nieces and nephews.
