Charles E. Cutts, P.E., who served as the chair of the Department of Civil Engineering from 1956-1969, died Sept. 12 at the age of 101.Professor Emeritus Charles E. Cutts served as the chair of the Department of Civil Engineering from 1956 to 1969. He died Sept. 12 at the age of 101.

“He was a very true gentleman,” said Professor Emeritus William Taylor, who himself served as civil engineering chair from 1972-1990. “Charles never raised his voice,” Taylor said. “The faculty all respected him as chairman. They liked him as a person,” Taylor added.

Cutts was a professor emeritus at Michigan State University. He served as chair of civil engineering from Sept. 1, 1956, to Aug. 31, 1969. He retired from MSU on July 1, 1984.

Cutts lived in Okemos, Mich., and was formerly of St. Paul, Minn.

He was born in Sioux Falls, S.D., on May 15, 1914. 

He received his PhD from the University of Minnesota in 1949. 

He was a registered professional engineer in Minnesota, Florida, and Michigan. 

He had also served as a professor at the University of Minnesota, University of Florida, and George Washington University.

A memorial service is planned for 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 1730 East Grand River Avenue, East Lansing, MI, 48823.
