The College of Engineering has raised $63 million, 79 percent of its $80 million fundraising goal

It’s official. Michigan State University raised $272 million in 2015-16 -- its best fundraising year in the university’s history. The $272 million is a major step toward MSU’s Empower Extraordinary campaign goal of $1.5 billion.

"The College of Engineering has always been a place where students have the opportunity to realize their dreams." -- Dean Leo Kempel“The success of this campaign shows how MSU’s mission to drive innovation and discovery, while providing world-class education and experiences for our students, is important to all those supporting Empower Extraordinary,” MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon said. “We are grateful for our donors’ generosity, which again demonstrates how Spartans’ individual strength can become a collective power that has extraordinary impact.”

The College of Engineering is helping lead the way with new fundraising totals in its history, too, said Stephen Bates, senior director of development and alumni relations.

“For the third consecutive year, the MSU College of Engineering has ended the year in record-breaking fashion,” Bates said. “In 2015-16, our alumni, corporate friends, and generous donors helped us raise $19.3 million. That’s up from $16.4 million the year before,” he said. “And that’s up from $12.6 million in 2013-14.”

Engineering Dean Leo Kempel said the fundraising success is thanks to the alumni and friends who generously support the institution.

“Our alumni believe in the direction that the College of Engineering is going,” he said. “They are helping to contribute to the success of our faculty and students.

“We lead the university in the number of new commitments for endowed faculty positions,” Kempel continued. “The loyalty of our alumni and their desire to support us is helping the college grow in our time of expansion.

“The College of Engineering has always been a place where students have the opportunity to realize their dreams,” Kempel added. “Through the support of alumni, friends, and corporate partners, we continue to expand those opportunities for future generations of Spartan Engineers.”

MSU hosted its public launch of Empower Extraordinary in October 2014. Since then, the university enjoyed two consecutive years of raising $238 million in 2013-14 and 2014-15. To date, more than 249,000 donors have contributed more than $1.2 billion toward the campaign goal.
