Ramani Narayan Contributes to Coca-Cola's Award-Winning PlantBottle

Ramani Narayan, University Distinguished Professor of chemical engineering and materials science, was one of the collaborators on a project that recently received a Gold award in the 22nd DuPont Awards for Packaging Innovation competition.

Thirteen winners and three notables were selected for sustainable achievements from a total of 160 entries from around the world. This year the DuPont Awards focused on the essential elements needed to drive breakthroughs in packaging. Innovative new developments, along with cost/waste reduction and improved sustainability, were the criteria. The two Diamond winners were determined to demonstrate excellence in all three areas, the five Gold winners demonstrated excellence in two areas, and the six Silver winners were selected on the merits of their breakthrough innovation. Three Notable honorees were selected for innovative problem solving.

Narayan was one of the collaborators in the development of Coca-Cola’s PlantBottle. In support of its zero waste strategy for packaging materials, Coca-Cola is using a PET resin sourced from up to 30 percent plant-based renewable material; monoethylene glycol from sugar cane replaces the petroleum-based pet feedstock. The new PlantBottle packaging—which has been launched in Denmark, the United States, Canada, Japan, and Brazil—can be recycled with other PET bottles in the existing PET recycling infrastructure. The new bottle technology leverages the key environmental advantages of traditional PET, which include maintaining carbonation, resource efficiency, and high recycling value, while reducing dependence on non-renewable resources.
