Feedline & Cabling

The cable pulling group poses for a photo after a job well done.

Running feedline and control cable between our new tower and shack was a very expensive ordeal. Because we are operating in a commercial building, we were obligated to follow fire code in our installation. This involved either running plenum rated cable or conduit. The best alternative was found to be conduit. Conduit installation was completed in December 1997 at a cost of about $3000(US).

February 8, 1998 saw the pulling of our feedline and control cables. Several club members participated in the cable pull. The pull of about 200 feet from shack to tower was difficult. In a matter of about 5 hours, however, four 9913 Ultra-Flex feedlines and three control cables spanned the complete 200 feet from shack to tower base. An additional three feedlines (one installed more recently) connect the tower base to an equipment cabinet housing the W8MSU repeater in a 4th floor service hallway.

Don Ebert (KA8YIW) prepares the cables for pulling.

There are at least 6 feedpoints that must be carried to the shack. With only 4 feedlines running all the way to the shack, this presented somewhat of a challenge in wiring. Our solution was to use a complicated combination of remote coax switches and duplexers to make all antennas accessible.
