Technology from Drzal Research Group Earns Nano 50 Award

A new nanotechnology material developed at Michigan State University has enabled XG Sciences, Inc., a start-up company headquartered in East Lansing, Michigan, to be named a winner in the third annual Nanotech Briefs Nano 50 awards program. The technology provides a fast and inexpensive process for separating layers of graphite (graphene) into stacks less than 10 nanometers in thickness but with lateral dimensions anywhere from 100 nm to several microns. Troy Hendricks wins Entrepreneurial Faculty Fellowship

Troy Hendricks was selected as one of the members of the first class of "Entrepreneurial Faculty for the 21 st Century University" fellows from the Graduate School at Michigan State University (MSU) and the Michigan Center for Innovation & Economic Prosperity (MCIEP) at James Madison College. $5,000 fellowship will support professional development for Troy Hendricks in the area of entrepreneurship and innovation. So far, his learning and attainment have been submitted as 3 World or US patents including ‘wrinkle-free films’ as well as 6 published or accepted papers. [More...] (11/07)

Christina Chan to Join Editorial Board

Christina Chan has accepted an invitation to join the editorial board of BMC Systems Biology. The journal covers all areas of systems-level analyses of biological events, and is in response to the rapid expansion of the field and the increasing awareness that the function of biological systems cannot be understood by reducing them to their component parts - they need to be studied as a whole to understand their properties. Bruce Dale name Editor-in-Chief of BioFPR

BioFPR bills itself as the definitive source of information on sustainable products, fuels and energy. Each issue will present a mix of news, patent intelligence and feature articles, as well as peer-reviewed articles. The journal is published by the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI) and John Wiley & Sons Ltd. BioFPR subscription information and selected free content are available online. (10/07)

Daina Briedis Named ABET Fellow

In recognition of her outstanding contributions and sustained quality service to engineering accreditation, the ABET Board of Directors has recognized Professor Daina Briedis as a Fellow of ABET. The Fellow award will be presented at the 2007 Annual ABET Meeting in Incline Village, NV. ABET, Inc. is the sole accreditor for college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering, and technology, and is a federation of 28 professional and technical societies representing these fields. ABET has provided leadership and quality assurance in higher education for over 70 years. (10/07)

MSU Selected for Department of Energy Contract on Alternative Fuels and Improved Combustion

Faculty from CHEMS will collaborate with faculty from MSU Mechanical Engineering and with the Ford Motor Co. to improve alternatives for diesel fuels and engines. Read more. (8/07)

Bruce Dale gives Sterling B. Hendricks Memorial Lecture at ACS meeting

Professor Bruce Dale presented the Sterling B. Hendricks Memorial Lecture at the American Chemical Society National Meeting, Boston, MA, Monday, August 20, 2007, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Convention Center, BCEC-259 A/B. The title of the lecture was "Why Cellulosic Ethanol is Nearer Than You Think: Creating the Biofuels Future". (8/07)

Bruce Dale Visits the White House  

Professor Bruce Dale was invited to a Feb. 23 meeting at the White House as part of a group of experts and executives who are either building vehicles that use alternative fuels or developing alternative fuels for transportation. Bush discussed his fuel proposal and how new technologies can strengthen America's energy security.(2/07)

Donald Morelli Joins CHEMS Faculty

Dr. Morelli brings over two decades of experience in Research and Development of new materials for the automotive industry. His current research focuses on characterization of novel materials and structures for advanced energy applications, with a special emphasis on high efficiency thermoelectric materials for energy conversion. He is also interested in the development of new semiconductors for the photocatalytic production of hydrogen from sunlight and water. Welcome Professor Morelli! (2/07)

Joe Gredell Receives Poster Award

Joe Gredell won 3rd place in the Genentech Biopharmaceutical Poster Award Competition at the Society for Biological Engineering’s First International Conference on Biomolecular Engineering in Coronado, CA. The poster, "Impact of Target mRNA Structure on Silencing Efficiency and Immune Stimulation in RNA Interference", describes his work investigating the biophysical and biochemical interactions that impact the successful application of the gene silencing technology, RNA Interference (RNAi). His work has implications in experimental therapeutics, functional genomics, and systems biology. Congratulations, Joe. (2/07)

Stuart R. Kaltz Named Goldwater Scholar

Stuart R. Kaltz, a materials science and engineering major and member of the Honors College, was selected as a 2006 Goldwater scholar. The Lapeer, Michigan, junior is one of three MSU students to receive the award this year. The College of Engineering has produced seven winners of the Goldwater Scholarship in the past eight years—five of these were chemical engi-neering and materials science majors. Kaltz plans to earn a PhD in biomedical engineering. His career goal is to conduct orthopedic research, either with a leading company or as a tenure track professor at a major university. The Goldwater Foundation awarded 323 scholarships for the 2006-2007 academic year from a field of 1,081 students. (10/06)

Timothy Howes awarded Churchill and NSF support

Timothy Howes (BS ’06) is was one of 10 students nationwide to receive an '06 Churchill Scholarship for graduate study at Cambridge University. The Brighton, Michigan, native headed to England in August to pursue an MPhil degree in computational biology at the elite British institution. The one-year award provides approximately $35,000 in tuition and living expenses for students doing graduate work in mathematics, science, or engineering. Howes also received a National Science Foundation (NSF) Fellowship for advanced study. The NSF awards 850 fellowships annually, and provides three years of support for advanced studies. While at MSU, Howes worked on research projects with Mark Worden, professor of chemical engineering, and John Ohlrogge, University Distinguished Professor of plant biology. He received fellowships to participate in research projects at the University of Hawaii, the Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences at the Claremont Colleges, and the chemical engineering division of Osaka University in Osaka, Japan. Drzal Named Fellow of SAMPE

Lawrence T. Drzal, University Distinguished Professor of chemical engineering and materials science has been named a Fellow of the Society of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE) for his contributions to developing a fundamental understanding of adhesion and composite materials. He received the award at the society's annual conference on May 6 in Long Beach California. (10/06)

Welcome Professor Scott Barton!

Scott Calabrese Barton recently joined the MSU Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science as an assistant professor. His research focuses on characterization of novel materials and structures for low-temperature fuel cell electrodes. Of particular interest is the creation of electrode structures for high power-density biofuel cells using enzymes as catalysts. He brings with him an NSF CAREER award for work in the biofuel cell area, as well a new program in biofuel cell modeling sponsored by an Air Force MURI grant. Dr. Calabrese Barton is also active in direct methanol fuel cell research, studying mixed-feed fuel cell systems that utilize selective electrocatalysts to minimize the volumes of feed and exhaust streams. Navin Asthana receives Outstanding Poster Award in Bio-product Development

Navin Asthana, a Research Associate in Professor Miller’s Research group won Outstanding Poster Award at the 28th Symposium on Biotechnology for Fuel and Chemicals 2006 organized by Society for Industrial Microbiology at Nashville, Tennessee. The poster, “Process for Continuous Esterification of Citric acid”, describes his work on use of reactive distillation technology for large-scale synthesis of tri-ethyl citrate (a bio-plasticizer). Successful application of this technology will help in reducing the cost of tri-ethyl citrate (from present $ 2.60 to $ 1.50 per pound) and facilitate its large-scale application as bio-plasticizer. Shengnan Xie selected for "Hot Topic" presentation and award

Shengnan Xie of Professor Walton's group was selected for an award and a "Hot Topic" presentation at the 2006 Nanomedicine Conference sponsored by the American Academy of Nanomedicine and hosted by Michigan State University. Congratulations, Shengnan.

CHEMS Professors in the News for Biotechnology Research

Professor Kris Berglund was in the news (Lansing State Journal, 4/12/06) for his efforts to establish a biotechnolgy park in Wayne County in a collaboration between Wayne County, Michigan State University, and his company Diversified Natural Products. Professor Larry Drzal was noted for his efforts to incorporate biomaterials into consumer goods. Click here.

Shengnan Xie Receives Poster Award

Shengnan Xie of Professor Walton's group won 2nd prize in the Dharmacon poster competition at the annual Michigan RNA Society Meeting hosted in 2006 by Wayne State University. The poster, "Molecular Barcode-Labeled Aptamers for Parallel Protein Measurements", describes her work investigating the creative combination of existing technologies to generate an improved method for simultaneous measurement of all proteins in a biological sample. Her work has implications in clinical diagnostics and in the emerging field of systems biology. Congratulations, Shengnan.

Professor Drzal Named Fellow of SAMPE

Larry T. Drzal, University Distinguished Professor, has been named a fellow of the Society for the Advancement of Materials and Process Engineering (SAMPE) for his contributions to developing a fundamental understanding of adhesion and composite materials. He will receive the award on May 6 at the annual conference in Long Beach, CA. Over its entire history, SAMPE has awarded the rank of fellow to approximately 100 members. Drzal has been designated a fellow by five different professional organizations over the course of his career.

Professor Baumann Receives Teaching Award

Professor Melissa Baumann received a 2006 MSU Alumni Club of Mid-Michigan Quality in Undergraduate Teaching Award. She was one of two faculty members university-wide to receive the honor. She was recognized at the University Awards Convocation.

Professor Narayan Named MSU Distinguished Professor

Professor Ramani Narayan received the MSU Distinguished Faculty Award at the 2006 University Awards Convocation. The awards go to individuals who have made widely recognized contributions to their fields, who have made significant contributions to MSU and its programs, and who represent and reflec the character and qualities of excellence valued at MSU.

Cynthia Sarver Recognized with Distinguished Academic Staff Award

Cythia Sarver, CHEMS academic advisor and assistant to the engineering college dean for student services was recognized at the 2006 University Awards Convocation with a Distinquished Academic Staff Award. The award is conferred on outstanding professionals with careers demonstrating long-term excellence and exceptional contributions to MSU.

Sachin Patil Recieves AIChE Best Poster Award

Sachin Patil of Professor wins a Best Poster Award at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) 2005 National Meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio. The poster presentation was on the, “Involvement of saturated fatty acids in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease”. The objective of the paper was to investigate the basic mechanism by which saturated fatty acids cause Alzheimer’s disease-related changes in brain neurons

Srivatsan Kidambi Recieves ACS Best Paper Award

Srivatsan Kidambi received a best paper award for his presentation in the "Polymers for Bioactive Surfaces" Symposium at the 230th ACS National Meeting held at Washington, DC on Aug 28-Sep 1, 2005. The title of the presentation was "Polyelectrolyte Multilayer as bioactive surfaces for cell co-culture." The aim of the paper was the development of a novel template/surface for tissue engineering applications.

MSU students win poster competitions.

Great Lakes Section ISPE Regional Poster Competition, March 8-9, 2005 in Indianapolis , IN

Neeraj Kohli took first place in the graduate competition.   His poster was entitled, "Integrated Electrochemical and Optical Methods for Studying Membrane Proteins."

Jairus Kleinert took first place in the undergraduate competition. His poster was entitled ,   "Immobilizing Enzymes and Cofactors in a Polyacrylic Acid Gel for Biosensor Applications."
