34th North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NARMC 34) Student Presentation Competition, 2nd place

Jorge Olortegui-Yume, a Mechanical Engineering PhD. student, and his major professor, Patrick Kwon, attended one of the premier manufacturing conference sponsored by SME, 34th North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NARMC 34), Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to present their joint paper titled ‘TOOL WEAR EVOLUTION IN MULTILAYER COATED INSERTS USING TOPOGRAPHIC IMAGING.’ This year the conference was held at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jorge presented the paper and proceeded to win second place in Student Presentation Competition. This work has been supported by Fraunhofer USA Center for Coating and Laser Applications.

 



2006 Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards

Joseph C. Keech, a mechanical engineering major, has been honored with a Board of Trustees award for his outstanding academic achievement. These awards are presented to the students having the highest scholastic averages in their graduating class. Joe has a 4.0 grade point average. During his career at MSU, he has served as a professorial assistant, conducting research on the dynamics of hockey sticks during slap-shots. Following graduation, he has accepted a position with the Launch Systems Group of Orbital Sciences Corporation in Phoenix, Arizona. He will join their Propulsion Engineering department working with rocket propulsion systems for spacecraft launch vehicles and ballistic missiles.

 

Armon Mahajerin, a mechanical engineering major, has been honored with a Board of Trustees award for his outstanding academic achievement. These awards are presented to the students having the highest scholastic averages in their graduating class. Armon has a 4.0 grade point average. In addition to his academic performance, he has been involved in a number of extracurricular activities, culminating in being named to the 2005 MSU Homecoming Court. This fall Armon will pursue graduate studies in mechanical engineering at the University of California, Berkeley.

ASME Student Design Contest

MSU and the Department of Mechanical Engineering has once again sparkled at the regional competition for the ASME Student Design Contest. The team of Andy Hartsig, Aaron Huber, Jon Bendert, and David Gasparovich won the regional competition, while the team of Chris Matulis, Jason Peabody, and Eric Gawel finished 4th. This makes 11 1st place positions out of 14 competitions.



SAE Baja Team

MSU’s SAE Baja team did quite well in their first (of three) competition for this year. MSU has not participated recently in the East competition. This year’s SAE East Competition was hosted by Auburn University and requires a vehicle that can float.

Approximately 70 teams passed technical and safety inspection and the results are compiled below for MSU’s team. The team leaders are Pete Schupska and Tim Locker. MSU Off-road racing team (Mini-Baja) Results for the SAE East Competition:
