Energy & Automotive Research Laboratories Facility Descriptions

The facilities include a powertrain lab, two energy labs, a pair of test-cells and a cold room together with fourteen offices for faculty and graduate students and a conference room.

Powertrain Research Lab

contains the core of the Automotive Research Experiment Station that was housed off-campus on Hulett Rd. directed by Harold Schock. ARES has been transferred to this purpose-built facility.

Powertrain Test-cell

a vibration-isolated, sound and light-proof room with air-handling to allow 1000kW engine to be motored under controlled conditions. It will be equipped with dynamometers for powertrain tests.

Engine Test-cell

a smaller version of the powertrain test-cell but larger enough to contain two engine tests. There is a Control Room sandwiched between the test-cells from which it will be possible to monitor and control experiments. A separate fuel room with multiple fuel lines will allow many different fuels to tested including biofuels.

Cold Room

replacing the Cold Room at the Automotive Research Experiment Station, this room will allow research on cold-starts at -40°C.

Ford Foundation Energy Lab

a purpose-built combustion laboratory for Drs Tonghun Lee, George Zhu and Indrek Wichman

Brown Foundation Energy Lab

houses MSU’s world class thermoelectric material research group including Drs Don Morelli and Jeff Sakamoto.

Link Conference

large enough for a seminar or short course and can be divided into two board rooms.
