SAE Formula in Top Ten at 2014 International Competition

Competing against 85 teams from Canada, Japan, Mexico, South America and the United States -- the Spartan Formula SAE team placed sixth at the international contest organized by SAE International (formerly Society of Automotive Engineers). Dan Riggs, Formula SAE Project Manager, said the team "out-performed" his expectations. "I definitely didn't think we would finish Top Ten when we were on our way to Nebraska," said Riggs, a junior mechanical engineering major from Battle Creek, Mich. "We're really looking to improve upon these results next year," he added.

Along with an overall ranking of sixth place, MSU’s car also had a third-place finish in skidpad; it finished fourth in the coveted endurance race; sixth in acceleration; and 16th in design.

The team introduced this year’s competition car during a ceremony in the MSU Engineering Building on May 2. From May 14-17, they competed at the SAE Collegiate Design Series at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Mich., where they finished every event without any major failures. They took a second place in business presentation, 15th in design and 43rd overall.

Formula SAE® is a student design competition by SAE International. The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style racecar. The prototype, which is evaluated for its potential as a production item, is specifically aimed at consumers who are non-professional weekend autocross racers. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules whose purpose is to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving.

SAE International hosts the SAE Collegiate Design Competitions to encourage around 8,000 students to go beyond textbook theory by designing, building and testing the performance of vehicles that include Aero, Baja, Formula, Formula Hybrid and snowmobiles. A variety of scholarships are available from SAE.
