For his long standing dedication to study abroad, especially in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the ME Study Abroad Program in Aachen, Germany, Dr. John Foss is being honored with the 2014 MSU Award for Outstanding Service to Study Abroad. Fo rmany years the Aachen program has allowed engineering students to experience a semester abroad not only studying their engineering in German classes but being allowed to conduct research in university laboratories.
This exceptional Summer opportunity for Mechanical Engineering students at MSU exists for students who have met the stringent academic and self-discipline/self-reliant criteria for acceptance. They study and conduct research at one of Europe's premier technical universities: The Rheinisch Westfalische Technische Hochschule (RWTH).
Students study the German language in the stimulating environment where it is spoken and daily life provides daily practice. Most importantly, they work in the research labs of the RWTH on their engineering projects. These projects place them in close contact with their research hosts and, through this connection, the students directly contact the German university system. These contacts allow them to learn how different that system is from our own. As an added benefit, embraced by past participants, is to execute this 9-credit study program with opportunities to travel in Europe on the planned three-day weekends.
