Mechanical Engineering Team Receives $2.5 Million Grant
Drs. Norbert Mueller, Tonghun Lee, Patrick Kwon, and Indrek Wichman, Professors in Mechanical Engineering, in collaboration with Electrical Engineering Professors Elias Strangas and Fang Peng are the recipients of a two-year, $2.5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency. The engine, as part of a serial hybrid vehicle, could cut fuel consumption by 80% and carbon dioxide emissions by over 90% compared to a conventional engine. The wave disc engine would also be smaller, light and cheaper to produce than a traditional car engine. This grant is the largest amount of federal stimulus money that MSU has received to date.
