Mechanical Engineering and Art Collaboration

Mechanical Engineering encompasses many areas, including Controls, Vibrations, Heat Transfer, Fluid Dynamics, Combustion, and Design. But to function in the real world, the mechanical engineer must also communicate with a multitude of audiences by being able to understand music, art, and the many facets of the humanities. In an effort to give a broader view to not only university students, but to high school students, collaboration was born between the Department of Mechanical Engineering and both Okemos and Williamston High Schools.

Under the guidance of Art-Advanced Placement teacher Rebecca Butler in Okemos and Paul Nilsson, a Chrysler engine, donated by Jack Withrow, was placed in Okemos High School for six weeks while students created their impressions of the engine, energy, or wherever their minds took them with the engine as a catalyst for artistic expression. The engine then moved to Williamston High School where it again became the focus for creation of energy and automotive inspired art.

These artistic efforts were displayed in the main hall of ERC South at a reception held on April 17th at which the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, J. Ian Gray, spoke. The collaboration turned out to be a huge success and was well received by faculty, staff, MSU students, high school students, parents, and local dignitaries.
