Baja Team Competes in Montreal

Traveling into Canada, the MSU Baja Team challenged 110 other teams outside Montreal, Quebec, for the final SAE race of the season.  This is the largest and most diverse race, with the best teams from around the world.  The race was held on a farm, in the outskirts of the city of Orford, with dynamic terrain, swamps and mud.  Like the other teams, the MSU Baja Team was looking for a big finish in all events, including design, acceleration, maneuverability, log pull, suspension and traction, and endurance.

The team performed extremely well in the initial stages of the event earning fourth and thirteenth gridding positions for the competition finale endurance race.  Running third after over three hours of the four hour event, one of MSU's engines failed, and in spite of refiring several times, the car was pushed off the course for the remaining minutes of the race.  MSU's other vehicle, which boasted a rarely seen 4-wheel drive system, experienced a failure in the chain drive, and finished the race several laps off the lead.

With 110 teams competing, MSU finished the cars back to back with overall dynamic placement of 7th and 8th.  In the individual events, the team placed 4th and 13th in the suspension and traction event, 15th in acceleration and 11th in the log pull.  With the SAE race season over, the team will spend the remainder of the summer solidifying the 2009 innovative vehicle designs.
