The Department of Mechanical Engineering is the oldest department in the College of Engineering. The department currently has a faculty of thirty-five full-time professors, four professors with joint appointments, and one adjunct professor, as well as five academic specialists and seven support staff. In academic year 2006-2007 we awarded 20 MSME degrees, and 18 PhD degrees In 2002 nine faculty members became part of the mechanical engineering program and their expertise in manufacturing and mechanics have become strongly intertwined with the practice of mechanical engineering.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD’s in mechanical engineering. The undergraduate program, which is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, 111Market Place, Suite 1050, Baltimore MD 21202-4012 - telephone (410) 347-7700, integrates a strong science base with an excellent design core. Our students develop their skills in communication, both written and oral, through an integrated communications program.
The graduate program begins with the master’s where students must complete 30 credits of graduate work, including in most cases a Master’s thesis. The MS program can be completed in four semesters. The PhD Degree is a research-based degree with no specific course requirements. To complete their degrees, most of our graduate students receive some form of financial aid, the majority of them in the form of research or teaching assistantships and fellowships.
