MC-ICE History
The concept of a state council for the promotion of cooperative education was born out of an early 1983 meeting of the National Commission for Cooperative Education’s Employer Advisory Council. Michigan was chosen as the first state to establish a formal council for cooperative education. Additionally, the Michigan model would serve as a prototype for the other states to learn from as they too organized task forces to expand co-op within their boundaries. The Michigan Council formally convened on November 11, 1983. The Michigan Council for Cooperative Education (MCCE) was formally introduced at this time. In 2005, MCCE was renamed the Michigan Council for Internships and Cooperative Education to reflect our relationship with internships.
MC-ICE Strategic Principles
- We are a non-profit, membership-based organization composed of colleges, universities, and employers
dedicated to the advancement of cooperative education and internships.
- We believe that cooperative education and internships —which combine classroom study with valuable “real world”
paid work experience— are important for the development of a highly skilled work force.
- We have a central purpose to promote greater awareness, understanding, and practice of cooperative education
and internships in the state of Michigan.
- We serve as a professional networking organization for the professional development of cooperative education
and internship professionals.
- We support multiple models of cooperative education and internship programs.
- We are committed to equal opportunity for all in the organization and encourage participation in cooperative
education and internships for all individuals.
- We support the principles of the Midwest Cooperative Education & Internship Association (MCEIA), National
Cooperative Education & Internship Association (CEIA), and the American Society for Engineering Education
Cooperative Education Division (CED).
Reach of Co-op Education and Internships in Michigan
Approximately 15,000 high school students are involved in vocational and cooperative programs and internships with over 6,000 employers.
Approximately 10,000 college students are enrolled in cooperative education and internship programs with over 1,000 employers.
