What is nanotechnology?
Nanotechnology involves materials so small (1 to 100 nanometers in size) that they exhibit unique properties. To put the nanoscale size range nanoscale in perspective, a hair is about 50,000 nanometers thick. The goal of nanotechnology research is to understand the unique properties of nanosized particles and use that knowledge to create new, high-performance materials, devices, and processes.

According to the National Nanotechnology Initiative, "Nanoscience and nanoengineering are leading to unprecedented understanding of the fundamental building blocks of all physical things.
