Fourth Annual Shell sponsored Spartan Engineering
FIRST LEGO League Challenge - East Lansing Regional Tournament will be held on Saturday, November 14, 2009 in the IM-Circle on the MSU Campus. A total of twenty FIRST LEGO League teams from the state of Michigan including fifteen teams sponsored by MSU Engineering, will compete in the regional tournament to earn the rights to advance to the State Tournament in mid-December.
Teams will compete to gain maximum points in the area of Teamwork, Research Presentation, Technical Interview, and their Robot Performance category.
Each annual Challenge has four parts, the Project, the Technical Interview, the Teamwork, and the Robot Game. Working in teams of up to 10 kids and guided by at least one adult coach, team members have about 10 weeks to:
- Build an autonomous robot that will, in 2 minutes and 30 seconds, complete pre-designed missions
-Analyze, research, and invent a solution for a given assignment
-Create a clever presentation about their solution to perform in front of a panel of judges
The culmination of all that hard work for many teams is the participation in an FLL event. FLL events are much like sporting events! Referees monitor and score the robot game. Judges review team presentations. Teams earn awards and trophies. It’s a pumped-up environment with music and excitement, and there is a ton of cheering.
On top of that, teams can use this web site to broaden communication and enrich their FLL experience.
This years mission?
Smart Move
Each and every day, transportation touches our lives. Your team travles to the palces where they learn, to the places where they play, to visit friends, and family. Things we wan, clothes we wear, the food we eat, the water we drink, medicines we need - all these travel over highways, on paths and trails, along railroad tracks, up and down rivers, across oceans, over mountains and deserts, along the streets we live on. Information tralves to us from experts, teachers, friends, and family. The challenge this season is to look at our own community and sicover how people, animals, information, and things travel....
Every year, FLL works with experts in the field to create a Challenge that relates to a significant real-world issue. The end result is a two-part Challenge that requires research to complete The Project , and science and engineering to master the complex missions of The Robot Game . It’s a fun and exciting way to encourage kids’ minds.
