PREFACE

About the CASE Analysis System

The CASE (Cylinder Kit Analysis System for Engines) Analysis System is a computerized systems which formalizes a structured approach for the analysis and design of pistons, rings and other cylinder components. It is composed of a library of individual programs which provide results that are useful in designing a cylinder kit component or evaluating the per formance of a particular cylinder kit configuration.

CASE has a twofold purpose. First, a number of programs have been developed for analysis and design purposes. Extensive documentation is provided and includes source code listings of all programs. Second, the structured approach allows researchers to develop new programs as new technologies become available. Many of the subroutines in the system can be incorporated in a new program thus allowing researchers/programmers to concentrate their efforts on their specific contribution. In addition, the standardization of input, output and documentation procedures should encourage usage of new developments in the public domain.

About this CASE System User's Manual

The CASE Analysis System is a group of computer programs used for the design and analysis of cylinder kit components such as pistons, compression rings and oil control rings. This User's Manual is designed to provide users with information on input data for the various CASE system programs. A brief description of the capabilities of each program is provided in the beginning sections of this manual. The appendices contain a comprehensive discussion of input and output data. Appendix A contains a discussion on various systems of units. Appendix B describes input data files that must be created by the user. Appendix D contains information on each allowable input data line for all CASE system programs. The formats for input data files are given in Appendix E.

Other CASE System Manuals

Case Theoretical Manual

The CASE Theoretical Manual describes the theory used in developing the various programs that comprise the CASE Analysis System. A comprehensive list of references is presented in the Appendix and these references are frequently cited in the theoretical discussions. The assumptions used in developing the various analyses procedures and the limitations of each program are addressed.

CASE Programmer's Manual

The CASE Programmer's Manual contains the source code listing of each program in the CASE analysis system. A description of each algorithm is included and references are made to discussions in the Theoretical Manual. The variables used in each subroutine are defined and various input and output data files associated with each subroutine are also defined. Flow charts of the analysis programs are included.

CASE Data Base Manual

The CASE Data Base Manual contains a comprehensive cylinder kit data base which can be very useful in developing the input data necessary to run the analysis programs. The items contained in the Data Base Manual include piston designs, compression ring designs, oil ring designs, connecting rod designs, combustion gas pressure, lubricant and material properties, bore distortions, temperature profiles and surface profiles.

CASE Verification Manual

A large amount of experimental data has been developed over many years and much of this data can be found in the technical literature. A compilation of experimental data obtained from a thorough literature survey is contained in the CASE Verification Manual. Comparisons of experimental data and results of analysis using the CASE system programs are presented in the documentation. The experimental data obtained from engine and engine component manufacturers is also documented and comparisons made with results from the CASE system programs.
