Custom Fabricated Optical Engines:

The Daimler Chrysler 3.5 liter engine rig studied is shown in the adjacent picture.  The head is mounted on top of a single cylinder Hatz engine that has been re-stroked to 81mm to match the crank shaft geometry of the Daimler Chrysler engine as well as use the original connecting rod.  Located between the Daimler Chrysler head and the Hatz reciprocating assembly are the quartz cylinder and piston with quartz insert.  Both the cylinder and piston are designed to provide optical access to the inside of the engine cylinder while retaining the original engine bore of 96mm the intake runner of the standard Daimler Chrysler intake manifold is used and modified to accept the port blockers for studying passive flow control.
