The presidents of MSU, U of M, and Wayne State announced Nov. 28 their resolution to establish more and stronger partnerships among themselves through a University Research Corridor meant to drive economic development in Michigan.

Board of Trustees Recognizes Electrical Engineering Student
Luke Niewiadomski of Grand Rapids, an electrical engineering major and member of the Honors College, was recognized at commencement by the MSU Board of Trustees for academic achievement. He was one of six December graduates university-wide to receive this honor. Board of Trustees Awards are granted at each commencement to students having the highest scholastic averages at the close of their last semester in attendance. Niewiadomski, a 2002 graduate of Catholic Central High School, has a 4.0 GPA.

Four Engineering Faculty Named as Fellows
Four members of our Engineering faculty were recently named as fellows by prestigious professional organizations: Eann Patterson was named an SEM fellow; Ning Xi was named an IEEE fellow; Robert P. Hubbard was recognized as an SAE fellow, as well as receiving an inaugural Auto Racing Safety and Humanitarian Service Award from the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA); and Robert Pennock was named a fellow of the AAAS.

Academic Computing and Network Services (ACNS) recently celebrated 50 years of computing at MSU. A September 29 openhouse featured tours of the Computer Center, historical exhibits developed by the MSU Museum, and a panel discussion featuring six MSU computing pioneers.[more]

Three Engineers Honored by MSU Alumni Association
At an awards dinner Sept. 28, three representatives of the College of Engineering were honored by the MSU Alumni Association. Joon S. Moon (BS '60 ChEMS) received a Distinguished Alumni Award; Anan Chaikittisilpa (MA '69 CEE) received an Alumni Service Award; and Mackenzie Davis, professor emeritus of environmental engineering, shared the recognition of an Honorary Alumni Award with Kermit the Frog. The James Von Ehr Scholars Program, a $1 million endowed scholarship fund to benefit College of Engineering undergraduates, was established this spring by James R. Von Ehr II, a 1972 computer science graduate and entrepreneur. The first four scholars were named this summer. [more]

Shell Oil Company Gift to Promote Youth Interest in Sciences and Engineering at MSU
The Shell SITES (Students Interested in Technology, Engineering and
Science) Program was recently established at MSU with a generous $67,000
contribution from Shell Oil Company. The purpose of the initiative is to
recruit the finest students across the K-12 spectrum to the study of
science and engineering. The College of Engineering received $33,000 to
expand the presence of FIRST LEGO League (FLL) at MSU. [more]
