College of Engineering Design Days at Michigan State University.

Thursday April 24, and Friday April 25 at the MSU Union

The College of Engineering at Michigan State University will hold its semester-ending Design Days on Thursday and Friday, April 24-25, between 8:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., at the MSU Union. Spring 2008 welcomes yet another group of outstanding achievers ranging in age from middle school through college seniors. The College of Engineering Design Days will span over two days, allowing for the interaction of pre-college students with college students who are currently involved in a variety of engineering disciplines.

Thursday, middle school students from around the state will participate in special activities involving “hands-on” learning as part of the Dart Foundation’s Day of Engineering Innovation and Creativity for 7-12 Grade Students. There will be interaction with the college freshmen as they showcase their cornerstone projects through prototype designs and poster presentations.

Friday, College of Engineering student teams, involved with projects that demand the integration of engineering theory and practice, will be in the spotlight. Robotic competitions, innovative machines, and prototype design builds are highlights of the day. High school students will have the opportunity to participate in design activities that allow them to explore engineering principles, and to interact with other high school and college students through evaluation of MSU student projects.

Headliners of the event are the graduating seniors as they present their capstone design projects through posters and oral presentations. These projects from computer science & engineering, electrical & computer engineering, and mechanical engineering, and— joining us this semester—civil and environmental engineering and applied engineering sciences, provide unique opportunities for students and faculty to collaborate with over 35 industrial sponsors on design projects. Each senior is a member on a team that has designed a new or improved product or process for a project sponsor, including: Motorola, Microsoft, IBM, General Motors, Boeing, MacSteel Jackson Division, NASA, Lear Corporation, Whirlpool Corporation, and Shell Oil Company.

A sample of spring 2008 projects:

  • Workflow Editor for Autopilot
  • Ford Sensor Showroom
  • Redesign of Recumbent Cycle for MidMichigan Medical Center
  • Best Execution of a Zero Drag Automotive Brake System
  • A Lightweight and Electromechanical Desk Chair for Children with Cerebral Palsy
Design Days provides a link between early notions of dabbling in technical challenges and the launching of a successful career. We welcome the addition of Applied Engineering Sciences and Civil Engineering to the team already comprised of Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. This continued growth expands an invaluable opportunity for pre-college students to experience the different avenues of engineering and their importance in the technological fields. This unique opportunity to interact with corporate technical mentors can provide answers to the unknowns that often cross students' minds when contemplating a career path.
