What is Applied Engineering
Sciences?
The Applied Engineering Sciences major is an undergraduate,
interdisciplinary program that combines scientific and technical
course work with a complementary cognate resulting in a Bachelor
of Science degree awarded by the College of Engineering. It is
the intent of the Applied Engineering Sciences major to provide
educational opportunities for the undergraduate student who wishes
to gain a broad foundation in the engineering sciences, core engineering
disciplines, and their application to one of the cognate areas.
Cognates are available in Business - Supply Chain Management and
Telecommunication. On a space availability basis, an Information
Technology Specialization can be combined with either of the two
cognates.
The program is designed to develop an individual who:
- Brings to the workplace a knowledge of business, management,
and logistics, grounded in calculus, basic sciences, and
engineering sciences;
- Can apply the rigor of their education and training to
a diverse set of problems;
- Is prepared to work at the interfaces
of planning, design, production, procurement, marketing,
distribution, sales, and management;
- Can effectively communicate across diverse professional
disciplines; and
- Is knowledgeable of contemporary technological
and societal issues and can facilitate the effective deployment
of new technologies.

This program additionally attempts to develop a
uniquely qualified individual capable of functioning in a variety
of employment opportunities that require the facilitation of communication
between technical and non-technical domains. Typical entry level
positions include: technical sales, technical journalism, communications,
telecommunications, industrial management, operations management,
procurement, sourcing, logistics management, public administration,
urban applications, environmental issues, political analysis,
and law.

What is the Society of Applied Engineering Sciences?
The Society of Applied Engineering Sciences is a student
organization that has been formed to foster interest and promotion
of the Applied Engineering Sciences major. The mission of the
Society of Applied Engineering Sciences is to inform engineering
students of the opportunities available to them through the AES
major and to promote their unique educational blend of technical/engineering
knowledge with a non-technical specialization to prospective employers.
We sponsor activities that allow members to become aware of industrial
opportunities. We also provide events where students can get to
know other AES students. Membership is open to Applied Engineering
Sciences and Non-Preference Engineering Majors of all class levels.
