College Admission and Major Changes

This page is intended for MSU undergraduate students only.

Beginning with the Spring Semester, 2005 admissions cycle, the College of Engineering is conducting a three-year pilot program called "Admit When Ready" (AWR) to allow students earlier admission to the College. See our Frequently Asked Questions about Admit When Ready here.

Admission to the College was formerly granted only when a student reached 56 credits and had completed the entrance requirements. Under the pilot AWR program, students are admitted to the College as soon as they have completed the entrance requirements. Admitted students are able to begin taking restricted courses immediately upon admission (provided all prerequisites have been satisfied). Once you are admitted, your admission will not be revoked unless you meet the criteria for removal from the college, recess or dismissal according to the Academic Standing of Undergraduate Students (ASUS). If you are admitted but wish to change to another major, you will need to submit an application and you will be reviewed at the end of that semester. Please see our AWR FAQ for more information.

Freshmen and sophomore students are always in one of two categories:

  1. ADMITTED (you are in a degree-granting major and have been admitted to the college) or
  2. CONTINUING (you have not yet been admitted to the college).

After admission decisions have been made at the end of each semester, all students will be notified at the address listed with the University (permanent address at the end of Fall and Spring and local at the end of Summer). You will receive a letter either admitting you to a major, denying you admission to the college, or explaining the remaining deficiencies you must complete to gain admission to the college.

Please note: We will no longer conduct mid-term admission reviews.

Choose what describes your status:

ENGINEERING FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES

Engineering No-Preference Students who will have completed 1 to 56 credits at the end of this semester

Admitted Engineering Freshmen and Sophomores who will have completed 1 to 55 credits at the end of this semester

Continuing Engineering Freshmen and Sophomores who will have completed 1 to 55 credits at the end of this semester

(See below for engineering sophomores who will reach 56 credits at the end of this semester.)

ENGINEERING JUNIORS-TO-BE, JUNIORS AND SENIORS

Juniors-To-Be who will have completed 56 or more credits at the end of this semester

Engineering Juniors and Seniors who want to change their major

NON-ENGINEERING STUDENTS

Non-Engineering Freshmen and Sophomores who wish to major in Engineering

Non-Engineering Juniors and Seniors who wish to major in Engineering

See the Admission Requirements here.

ENGINEERING NO-PREFERENCE STUDENTS WITH 1 to 56 CREDITS AT THE END OF THE CURRENT SEMESTER
No College admission action will be taken until you have declared an engineering degree granting major. If you reach 56 credits and your major is still Engineering No-Preference, you will be denied admission and you will have to change your major to another degree-granting program at MSU.

ADMITTED ENGINEERING FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES WITH 1 to 55 CREDITS AT THE END OF THE CURRENT SEMESTER
If you have been admitted to the college in your current engineering major and wish to change to another engineering major, you must complete an application. Your request for major change will be reviewed at the end of the semester in which you applied. If you meet the admission criteria you will be admitted to the new major. If you are denied admission, you will remain admitted to your current major.

CONTINUING ENGINEERING FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES WITH 1 to 55 CREDITS AT THE END OF THE CURRENT SEMESTER
Because you will be reviewed for admission to your current major, you must be officially declared in the engineering major of your choice by the last day of final exams for the semester. Major changes are accomplished by contacting the UUD office at the location serving your housing location. See http://www.msu.edu/~uud/offices.html for this location.

You will automatically be considered for admission at the end of every semester. If all requirements are met, you will be admitted into the College in your current major preference. If you do not meet the criteria for admission you will continue to be reviewed each semester until you reach 56 credits, at which time you must be admitted to an engineering major or you will be denied admission and required to change out of engineering to another degree-granting program at MSU.

JUNIORS-TO-BE WHO WILL HAVE COMPLETED 56 OR MORE CREDITS AT THE END OF THE CURRENT SEMESTER
You will automatically be considered for admission in your current engineering major (except Engineering No-Preference) at the end of the term you reach 56 credits . If you wish to change your current major, contact the UUD office at the location serving your housing location. See http://www.msu.edu/~uud/offices.html for this location.

No application is required unless you wish to select an alternate major preference or want to submit a statement describing extenuating circumstances which have affected your ability to complete all admission requirements. You may submit an application using the link at the bottom of this page.

If all requirements are met, you will be admitted into the College in your current major preference. In certain majors, additional students may be considered for admission, on a space-available basis. If you are denied admission, you will be required to change out of engineering to another degree granting program at MSU.

ENGINEERING JUNIORS AND SENIORS WHO WISH TO CHANGE THEIR MAJOR
Students who are already admitted to an engineering major who wish to change majors within engineering must submit an application using the link at the bottom of this page. If all requirements are met, you will be admitted into the College in your major choice. If you do not meet the requirements of admission and are denied admission, you will remain in your current major.

NON-ENGINEERING FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES WHO WISH TO MAJOR IN ENGINEERING
Freshmen and sophomores currently in majors outside Engineering who wish to pursue an engineering major should complete a major change at the UUD office at the location serving your housing location. See http://www.msu.edu/~uud/offices.html for this location.

After your major is changed to Engineering, you will automatically be considered for admission at the end of every semester.

NON-ENGINEERING JUNIORS AND SENIORS WHO WISH TO MAJOR IN ENGINEERING
Juniors and seniors currently in majors outside Engineering who wish to pursue an engineering major must submit an application using the link at the bottom of this page. If all requirements are met, you will be admitted into the College in your major choice. If you do not meet the requirements of admission and are denied admission, you will remain in your current major

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
To be admitted, you must have:

  • Completed the required core courses:
    • Math 132 and Math 133. You must have a 2.00 grade point average or higher in all mathematics courses completed at the time of admission (this does not include remedial mathematics courses)
    • Physics 183 or 183B
    • Computer Science 231 for Computer Engineering, Computer Science and Electrical Engineering majors; Computer Science 131 for all other majors
    • Chemistry 141 or 151 for all majors except Computer Science
  • Earned a minimum number of MSU and technical credits:
    • Engineering freshmen and sophomores must have completed at least 12 MSU credits, at least six of them from technical courses.
    • Junior and senior applicants with a current major in a college outside of Engineering must have completed a minimum of 12 MSU credits, at least 10 of them from technical courses.
  • Achieved the Necessary GPA Requirements (see table below):
    • There are specific GPA requirements that you need to meet for admission to each Engineering program. Admission is based on a combined cumulative/technical grade point average calculated as follows: 1) the cumulative grade point average of all courses taken; plus 2) the technical grade point average based on all technical classes taken (generally those in the College of Engineering and the College of Natural Science ) at MSU, divided by 2. Students attaining the required GPAs are guaranteed admission. In certain majors, additional students may be considered for admission, on a space-available basis.
    • The average combined cumulative/technical GPA required for upper school admission to each degree program changes from year to year depending on the demand for that program.
