Position Statement

ECE Chairperson

Michigan State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the College of Engineering, with a preferred starting date of August 15, 2007. The Department has approximately forty faculty, seven of whom are IEEE fellows. With a strong commitment to research, teaching, and service, the Department annual research expenditures have increased 300% over the past 6 years. The Department has accredited B.S. degree programs in both Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering. Focus areas of the Department include Electrosciences (Electromagnetics, Electronic Materials and Devices), Computer Engineering (Architecture, Networks, and VLSI), and Systems (Biomedical, Controls, Communications, Signal Processing, Power, and Robotics). The current enrollment is approximately 180 full-time graduate students and 660 undergraduate students. The Department is committed to developing and maintaining state-of-the-art facilities and instrumentation in support of its research foci.

The Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering will promote the development of a departmental vision of academic excellence, and will represent the Department to the academic community, industry, and government. The Chair will lead the strategic planning in the Department by actively working with faculty in the Department and across the University to identify and pursue innovations in research, teaching, and service. The Chair is also responsible for promoting cultural diversity throughout the Department; in Fall 2005, the Department reported the largest enrollment and largest percentage of enrollment of underrepresented minority electrical engineering graduate students among Big Ten universities.

Michigan State University enjoys a park-like campus of over 2000 developed acres. The campus is adjacent to the cities of East Lansing and Lansing, Michigan's capital. The Greater Lansing area has approximately 480,000 residents. The communities have fine school systems and place a high value on education. Candidates must be qualified to receive an annual appointment at the rank of Full Professor with tenure. Moreover candidates must have a strong record of teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The candidate should have a distinguished track record of research and funding from diverse sources. In addition the candidate must provide evidence of scientific and organizational leadership and educational innovation.
