ECE-NDEL Faculty and Staff Receives the 2005 FAA-ATA "Better Way" Award
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Air Transport Association of America (ATA) extended well-deserved congratulations to ECE faculty, Lalita Udpa, one staff member and three graduate students from the Nondestructive Evaluation Laboratory (NDEL), working on the "Turbo Magneto-Optic Imaging (MOI) for Inspection of Alodine fasteners" team, winners of the 2005 FAA-ATA Better Way Award. The Better Way Award annually recognizes a government-industry team that has developed and applied a technology, technique, process, or policy resulting in a more sensitive, more reliable, or more cost effective process for inspecting and testing of aircraft, aircraft components, or aircraft systems.

The NDEL team set it's sights on developing a more sensitive system to detect surface and subsurface cracks in the lower row of rivets in aircraft lap splices. The existing eddy current technique requires inspection of each rivit individually. The MOI system is quicker and more reliable than the existing methods as determined by the tests at the FAA Airworthiness Assurance Nondestructive Inspection Validation Center (AANC).
