Subir Biswas and his collaborators from MSU Animal Science have been awarded a USDA grant for their project on “Wearable Networked Sensors for Quantitative Well-Being Management of Non-caged Chickens in Poultry Settings.” The grant will support engineering research on ultra low-power and self-organizing ad hoc network protocols among bird-mounted sensors, on-body and off-body data fusion models, software middleware, and networked actuation for infrastructure control. On the Animal Science front, the grant will support research on quantitative understanding of the connections between birds’ well-being and how they interact, use space and resources, and their general locomotion patterns. This is a collaborative project with members from Washington State University and University of California, Davis. More about Dr. Biswas’ research can be found at http://neews.egr.msu.edu.
