Li Xiao, Matt Mutka, and Ning Xi have been awarded a grant from the National Science Foundation for the project entitled "LEAPNet: Self-adaptable All Terrain Sensor Networks." This project addresses the design, prototyping, and evaluation of hopping sensors and efficient algorithms for sensor deployment in difficult areas and rugged terrain.

Xiaobo Tan's Smart Microsystems research was featured as part of the MSU College of Engineering Summer Magnet & Related Training Institute. Tan's students, Kiyoung Kwon and Stephen Shatara, showed educators projects that Middle School students could easily work on. Shatara showed how electroactive polymers were used to create a robotic fish. Kwon demonstrated a robot model showing human emotion through voice-activation. See the full State News article for

From the State News, MSU Board of Trustees unanimously approved the pursuit of degree and research programs in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Elvin and Chakrabartty receive NSF Grant
Niell Elvin and Shantanu Chakrabartty have received an NSF grant to develop sub-microwatt fatigure sensors for structural health monitoring. With power budget less than 1 microwatt, these sensors can significantly advance the state-of-art for self-powered infrastructure monitoring and for predicting fatigue in biomechanical implants.

"IFAC Fellow Awards are given to persons who have made outstanding and extraordinary contributions in the field of interest of IFAC, in the role as an Engineer/Scientist, Technical Leader, or Educator."

ECE Visiting Research Assistants at the Tokyo Institute of Technology
PhD candidate, Ben Jacobs, and Senior, Andrew Baczewski are currently Visiting Research Assistants at the Tokyo Institute of Technology (TITech) in Japan as a part of an NSF International Research and Education in Engineering initiative. Tim Hogan and Research Team to Receive Grant
(From The State News) "Tim Hogan, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering, was one of two MSU professors recommended to receive a grant to purchase equipment needed to complete a defense research project. Karim Oweiss and Rong Jin Receive NIH Grant
Karim Oweiss and Rong Jin (CSE) have received an NIH grant for their project, "Mining Large-scale Neural Ensemble Recordings." This project aims to develop signal processing tools and machine learning algorithms for mining the spike trains that are recorded for large neural ensembles. Ning Xi Named as an IEEE Fellow
Ning Xi has been named an IEEE fellow, effective January 1, 2007, for his contributions to the field of nano-robotic manipulation and assembly.

Academic Achievement
Luke Niewiadomski of Grand Rapids, an electrical engineering major in the College of Engineering and a member of the Honors College, was among six students honored on Friday, December 8th, by the MSU Board of Trustees, for having the highest scholastic average at the close of their last semester in attendance. Luke is the son of Mitch and Michelle Niewiadomski, and is a 2002 graduate of Catholic Central High School. He has a 4.0 GPA.
