Summer Residential Programs
The Diversity Programs Office understands that to support our students in their efforts to succeed academically, we must invest in our young people not only while they are at MSU, but before they get here! We have expanded our Summer Residential Programs to meet the needs of future and current Spartan Engineers!
Academic Intensive Summer Residential Program (AISRP)
The Diversity Programs Office sponsors a three or four week summer residential program designed to give 9th-11th grade students preliminary exposure to life on a college campus, instruction in college math, science, computer programming, study techniques, time management and written and oral communications. Participants also enjoy a variety of educational field trips that provide hands on, practical experience and knowledge. This program places high demands and expectations on participating students.
Engineering and Science Summer Academy (ESSA)
Done in collaboration with the Michigan Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (MI-LSAMP), ESSA is a six-week, residential, academic intensive program designed to acclimate incoming freshmen with both the academic and environmental aspects to post secondary education. Participants will attend daily classes in Math, English/Writing, Chemistry and an Engineering Seminar course to expose students to post graduation and professional opportunities. Participants will also attend presentations from representatives in all engineering disciplines within the College of Engineering.
Summer Experience in Mathematics (SEM) Summer Residential Research Program (SEM)
SEM is a collaborative effort between the Lyman Briggs College and the College of Engineering and is funded by the Math Association of America (MAA) and the Michigan Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (MI-LSAMP). The objective of SEM is to encourage all students, with a particular emphasis on historically underrepresented minority students, to pursue higher education in the mathematical sciences, an objective shared by MI-LSAMP. The program provides a research experience for students who have completed at least three sequences of college level calculus courses.
Summer Undergraduate Research Academy (SURA)
The MI-LSAMP SURA is designed to provide a comprehensive research training and enrichment experience. SURA consists of three components or phases that begins with an eight week summer portion and ends at the completion of the successive fall semester.
