What is the Design Program?

The Design Program was originated for enhancing design education, incorporating an end-of-semester
undergraduate design conference, and a program of outreach scholarship.

Design Program Goals:

  • To educate junior- and senior-level engineering students in contemporary engineering design practices and the associated eclectic fringe disciplines.
  • To provide manufacturers a competitive advantage in the marketplace by flooding them with a deluge of out-of-the-box thinking, entrepreneurship, innovation and creativity. The essence of this town-and-gown enterprise is the synergistic confluence of ideas from seasoned industrialists and energetic, technologically-adept undergraduates.
  • To provide manufacturers with new ideas so that they are able
    • to develop new products
    • to improve production protocols
    • to increase the number of job opportunities
    • to increase market share and profitability
    • to enhance existing products
    • to enhance workforce development
    • to stimulate company growth
    • to enhance economic development, and
    • to improve the quality of life in the communities where the companies are situated.
  • To undertake humanitarian projects in Michigan communities.
  • To educate pre-collegiate students about the benefits of a college education, mechanical engineering practices, and the role of engineers in society.
