Goodman's principal personal research interest is genetic algorithms, and in particular, parallel genetic algorithms. His work in the 1990's on using genetic algorithms for automating the design of structures for crashworthiness, noise, vibration, was so successful that Goodman and Averill were co-founders of a company to refine the technology, use it to solve industrial design problems, and introduce software to industry for solving those problems themselves.
