Capabilities of the ESEM

Detection Capabilities

  • The ESEM is equipped with both secondary electron detectors and a backscattered electron detector

In situ Testing Stages

  • Special stages are available for in situ investigations for almost any application

  • Hot and cryogenic stages permit examination of samples over a wide temperature range of 80oC to +1000oC

  • A micro-injection system which allows the direct application of liquids onto samples while imaging a region of interest

X-Ray Microanalysis System

  • The ESEM is equipped with a Link ISIS system that has an energy resolution of  130 eV. A Si(Li) detector utilizes an Atmospheric Thin Window (ATW) that permits detection of elements ranging from carbon (Z = 6) to bismuth (Z = 83) at chamber pressures of 2 -10 Torr (665 - 1330 Pascals) of water vapor

  • X-ray mapping allows the determination of imaging the chemical distribution of elements in a specimen
